reading a pattern help
Square 8 - Bells & Rib
(multiple of 5 sts plus 1, excluding border)
With D, cast on 40 sts.
Rows 1 and 2: Knit
Row 3 (RS): K2, k1, *p4, k1; repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Row 4: K2, p1, *k4, p1; repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Rows 5 and 6: Repeat Rows 3 and 4

There's the first few lines of the pattern.

I'm making a lil example pattern of this first. I'm doing 15 stitches + 1. But I'm lacking stitches.

So then I added 2 more (thinking the excluding border would be 2 stitches extra?) so now it's 15 +1 +2. And I'm still lacking stitches.

Help please.

It should work with a multiple of 5sts plus 1 plus 4 border sts. So if you do 5sts times 3 plus one plus 4 border you should be ok (20sts)
For the cast on of 40 sts, it's 5x7 plus one plus 4 border sts or 35+1+4=40.
