Quick pattern question please

Hi all,

I'm knitting a pair of TOE UP socks on DPN's.

The part I'm a little confused about is the wording on starting the gusset.

Round 1 Work across needle 1 and 2, then the increases it says to knit.

Does work across in this case just mean knit 1 and 2? If so why not just put the word knit in and if not what does work across mean?

Work is the verb used for when stitches might be either knit or purled, or both. If 'knit' was to be used, some people may think you actually knit all the stitches rather than knit and/or purl them or however they should be done for the stitch pattern.
