How to knit top (tight) part of hat?

I'm knitting a hat with circular 8" size 3 needles. The instructions say to decrease the top of the hat until only 6 stitches remain. However, I have about 30 stitches left at this point, and the circle is too tight to knit with the needles. I'm sure there's a technique to handle this, but I don't know what it is--and I've Googled but can't find anything.

Can anyone help? Even knowing what term to Google for would be helpful.

There are several ways of doing this, You can switch to double pointed needles or if your circular needle is long enough you can do magic loop or single loop or you can use 2 circular needles. There are videos for each of these on the Advanced Techs tab under Free Videos at the top of the page.
