Putting a patch on a knitted beanie

I am making flap hats for my nephews for Christmas. I will be putting a football team logo on them...and then the mohawk trim..I ordered the patches and now am thinking about the best way to attach them to the caps. I know there are things to consider...the knit stretching etc. Has anyone ever attached a patch? I am thinking I will have to use an embroidery hoop to keep it taunt.
ANY SUGGESTIONS?
