Need help understanding instructions.
I'm making a baby hat and with 71 stitches the instructions say

Establish Pat St: Row 1 (RS): K23, SSK, k9, yo, k1, yo, k9, k2 tog, k to end. Row 2 and all WS rows: Work even. Purl the center yo, k1, yo. Work even in pat as established until 36 rows of Stripe Sequence have been completed, end on WS. Bind off.

So I've done row 1. What now? What is the center? If I work all the WS rows even do I keep repeating the RS row?

The hat is supposed to come to a point in the front.

Please help.

You should be able to post a link now. It would help us answer.. Where is the point supposed to be? Why do you need to know the center? Is it part of the pattern?

The pattern wants you to work row 2 and all WS rows without the decreases (ssk and k2tog) or increases (the yarn overs). When you come to the yo, k1, yo from the previous row (which occurs in the middle of the row), purl each one of these stitches.

It says to purl the center yo k yo and there's only 1 sequence of stitches like that in the row. To work 'even' means not to do any incs or decreases and to work in the stitch pattern established in row 1. The ssk/k2tog and YOs are part of the pattern, so just repeat that row and purl on the WS.

salmonmac, so my RS rows will be increase rows and my WS rows will be even stitches with Knit 34, purl 3, k 34. And then the purl stitches will increase every time? I think I understand. I'll try it.

Thanks for answering!

The RS rows won't increase because the 2 yo increases are offset by the ssk and k2tog decreases. The stitch count should stay the same across the RS rows. I'm only counting 69sts across rows 1 and 2, not the 71 from the cast on. Are there extra edge stitches? Can you post a link to the pattern?
