If I finish a knit row, then do the 2 rows in St st, which is Purl one row, Knit one row, how do I get to the the correct side of my work for ROW 1 to knit across?

You're adding an extra row in your thinking - beginning with a knit row do only 2 rows in st st, so that's knit a row, purl a row, then the next row will be Row 1 with knit across. I'm presuming you're doing something else for row 2 which will not be in stockinette.
