Winter of 2009, I went at my first cardigan; the wool in Paton's Classic Merino in denim heather and it gets me compliments left, right and center! The pattern is from Paton's TopDowners pamphlet, so of course, it was knitted from the top down.
Last winter, I found myself with a lot of left-over red and white acrylic worsted and decided to use it up on a pullover for myself. It needed to have a high neck, but not a turtle. I took the plain pullover pattern from the same Paton's book and set up to work a wheatear cable down the front. Unfortunately, not all the white yarn was the same color! The difference is not as noticeable as in the photo, and I get LOTS of compliments on this one, too.

They are both great looking. One of these days, I am going to make a top down sweater. Haven't tried that yet.

�Muchas gracias! for all your nice compliments! Re: the red&white sweater, I think this is how one starts designing patterns. The pullover pattern is a perfectly plain, same-front-and-back crewneck. I just reserved enough stitches in the front (starting right at the top of the crewneck ribbing) for the braided panel, and then I worked in the red until it began to run short, then "tapered" into the white (...and kept running out of all the bits of white I had!

). Now, I have a pattern for a crewneck with cable panel and two color patterning. Now, I am getting really ambitious - I have lots of patterns for Scandinavian Fair Isle sweaters and have just converted one to be knitted top-down and am tackling that!
