Help explain this diagram

That's got me curious now. Mikey from The Crochet Crowd just uploaded a Youtube video a few month ago on how to read crochet diagrams. I don't recall seeing anything like that. Wonder if I missed something?

Well, the diagram seemed pretty standard to me, but I've been reading crochet diagrams for several years now, so . . .

Perhaps Mikey didn't cover the puff stitch in his video; it's not all that common of a stitch. At any rate, the diagram for the puff stitch and the crocheted stitch in the image do seem to match (plus, I double checked it in The Crochet Stitch Bible, which uses diagrams).

I'm not exactly sure if the puff-like stitch I used in this Hawaiian granny square tutorial is the same as what is shown in the border pattern in question here, but it might help get the idea of a puff stitch: http://www.hookedonneedles.com/2009/...ny-square.html
