I am knitting an afghan in a lace pattern. I keep making mistakes and having to rip it out, then I drop stitches as there are a lot of yarn- overs and slip stitches. I understand there is something called a lifeline, but I have no idea how to use it. Can anyone help me?

Welcome to KH!
Yes, definitely a good idea to use a lifeline. There's a good video on the KH site.

Hi and welcome to KH. Check out the Using a "lifeline" video.

The link wasn't working, I'm editing to try to get it to work.

I will definitely be using this technique from now on out. Not even for complicated patterns, I need it for the simple things. It sure would have helped me last night and saved the few inches I had knit on my mom's scarf!
