Help with Vest pattern
Hi,
I've been knitting a vest pattern from the bottom up. I've finished the right and left fronts and now I'm working on the back, the shoulder shaping part.

Everything was fine with the pattern until I got to the shaping shoulders for the back. You start with 85 stitches and decrease down to 65 stitches. Then, here’s the confusion for me:
Row 1 WS p17, k31, p 12, w & t
Row 2 RS k9, ssk, p1, k31, p1, k2tog, k9, w & t
Row 3 p7, p2tog, k1, p2, BO 29, next st p1, k1, ssp, p2,
w & t
Row 4 k 3, p1, k2, turn
Row 5 p2, k1, p3, pwtog, p4, pwtog, p4.
Row 6 k to last 3 sts, p1, k2
Put all 16 sts onto stitch holder.
Attach yarn for left side shoulder on RS:
Row 1 k2, p1, k3 w & t
Row 2 p to last 3 sts, k1 p2
Row 3 k2 p1 k3, kwtog, k4, kwtog, k4
Join both shoulders together with 3 needle BO.

Notice in row 3 you bind off 29 stitches, but you never bind off again.
I thought you would bind off from each side to make it symmetrical. Also when I total up all the decreases, I should have 49 decreased stitches (65 minus 49 equals 16 stitches for the stitch holder) and I count 35 in the directions including the 29 stitch bind off.

After I have 16 stitches on the holder, I am then supposed to work on the left side shoulder? There is no information about how may stitches I am starting with for the left side shoulder. There is no clue that this was to happen, that the back was going to be knitted in 2 parts. There is no drawing for the pattern and no photo for the back. I haven’t been able to find the designer’s email to ask.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

The BO on row 3 is for the back neck so you'll have 2 separate shoulders. Rows 4 to 6 have you finish the one shoulder, then you go to the other shoulder and work the sts as stated and you'll be down to 16 sts on that. The 3 needle BO is to join the front shoulders to the bac.

The neck is shaped by binding off the center 29 sts and then using short rows to shape the shoulders. The central bind off isn't an unusual way to form the back of the vest. If you start this part with 65 and bind off 29 for the neck then each shoulder should be 18sts. (Does the pattern define pwtog and can you link to the pattern?)
And yes start the left shoulder at the bold directions.

Row 1 WS p17, k31, p 12, w & t
Row 2 RS k9, ssk, p1, k31, p1, k2tog, k9, w & t
Row 3 p7, p2tog, k1, p2, BO 29, next st p1, k1, ssp, p2,
w & t
Row 4 k 3, p1, k2, turn
Row 5 p2, k1, p3, pwtog, p4, pwtog, p4.
Row 6 k to last 3 sts, p1, k2
Put all 16 sts onto stitch holder.
Attach yarn for left side shoulder on RS:
Row 1 k2, p1, k3 w & t
Row 2 p to last 3 sts, k1 p2
Row 3 k2 p1 k3, kwtog, k4, kwtog, k4
Join both shoulders together with 3 needle BO.
