Welcome to Knitting Help!
Usually with charts, you begin on the right side (the public side) of your knitted piece and read the chart from right to left. I can't read the notations on the bottom of the chart at the two vertical lines. What do they say?

Hi there,

Thank you

From looking online I have seen that patterns tend to read from bottom right to left, but what's confusing me I think is the 6 Stich repeat. Also the notations at the bottom. The far left says for sizes 1 & 2, and the next one in is for size 3, if that makes sense. I'm doing size 2, and don't really get which bits of the chart I use and how often?

Many thanks for your response!

Hi,

Sorry it also says Purl Rows Start, but I'm starting with RS facing - Knit Row?

OK, yes right side (RS) or knit rows for your pattern start on the right edge of the chart and read to the left. Wrong side (WS) rows read left to right on the chart. Start the pattern at the right edge of the chart on row one (knit row). Keep repeating from the right side of the chart until you finish row 1 (row 1 is all the same and really has no pattern anyway). When you turn onto the purl side, you'll start at the line for sizes 1 & 2 and read the chart left to right. When you get to the end of the chart for row 2, go back to the left edge and repeat the chart for row 2 until you finish your sts. You can check that you're getting the pattern correctly on the following rows by making sure the stitches are lining up correctly.
The stitch repeat is telling you the pattern repeat for this chart. The chart is actually showing you two repeats.

Hi there,

Just been trying the pattern following your instructions. I'm unsure if I'm to work fron the size 1 & 2 line to the end of the repeat (8 stitches), then continue to work those 8 stitches, or do I only work from the size 1 & 2 line to end of repeat once, then continue working just the 6 stitch repeat. I'm guessing it's the first option??
Thanks

You want to repeat the entire chart. It's just for the initial sts that you start at the 1 & 2 line and work to the right (because it's a purl row). After these 8 sts, go back to the beginning of row 2 and reading from the left to the right complete the chart again (and again for however many times you need to complete the row). Keep going on the entire chart for the rest of the rows.

Your instructions are great, very clear and easy to understand. Problem is row 3 pattern doesn't match up? I can't understand why.

Check that you have the correct number of sts for the row and that the pattern looks correct on row 2. You probably end the row with the three sts in the contrast color. Row 3 then starts at the 1&2 line and should begin with one background stitch and then one contrast color which is centered over the middle stitch of the three from the previous row.
