Casting on and Binding off at beginning and end of rows
Hi,
I started the Nina scarf by Louisa Harding and am having problems keeping the stitch count correct. The chart has you casting on 2 stitches at the end of a row and then casting on 2 stitches at the beginning of the next row. So there are now 4 additional stitches at the beginning of the row. When I continue on that row in the chart, I am supposed to bind off two stitches at the end of the row. In the beginning of the next row, you are supposed to bind off two stitches and then continue on for that row. The binding off/casting on is to create a ruffled edge. However, after binding off and casting on, my stitch counts are off for the row and I have either too many or too few stitches compared to the chart. Is there something I'm supposed to do with the cast on stitches before knitting the rest of the row?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Here's a link to a picture of the scarf. At least in one of the projects, it looks like a picot edge. I don't have the pattern but usually you cast on and then bind off and continue the row for this kind of edge. Can you quote the exact directions for the edge sts?
As for keeping to the chart, it may help to mark off the first and last chart sts by adding stitch markers to your needles. Then you can work the chart independently of whatever is happening to the edge stitches

The chart directions for the edge/body:
row 2 (body pattern to end of this row) CO2
row 3 BO2, (body pattern)CO2
row 4 BO2, (body pattern) k3, p3.
row 5 regular edge, no bo or cos at either end of row
row 6 k3, (body pattern) CO2
row 7 BO2 (body pattern) CO2
row 8 BO2 (body pattern) no bo or cos at end of this row
The markers are a great idea!

Ok, so the 2 cast on sts at the end of row 2 are immediately bound off at the beginning of row 3. The 2 cast on sts at the end of row 3 are immediately bound off at the beginning of row 4. The same pattern holds for rows 6-8. Cast on at the end of the row, bind off at the beginning of the next row. You should never have 4 new sts at the edge, always 2sts.
It's such a lovely delicate pattern. Have fun knitting it.
