balsam jacket help
Hello everyone. I finally made it past the first 8 rows on my top down sweater jacket construction. I have completed the rows for the back and shaping the shoulders. I have put my provisional cast on live sts on the circ needle to start down the front now and added my extra ball of yarn, bound off my neck sts and now have two sides of 17 sts. One ball of yarn for one side, another for the other.

The next directions are as follows:

Shape shoulders
Rows 3&4 : work to 4 sts past neck opening, w&t.

Rows 5-8: work to wrp st, hide wrp, work 3 sts, w&t.

Just one question... how do I work 4 sts past neck opening when there are no sts?
Like I said before there are 17 on each side and 30 bound off sts in the middle to start the neck opening.
Furthermore. How do I continue to work sts through rows 5-8 when there are no sts?
Help!

Is this where the live sts from the provisional cast on come into play?

I have already put those live sts on the circ needle, k 17, added my second ball of yarn, bound off 30, and k17. So I'm past the live sts, and now starting down the front of the jacket.

Wow, excellant! Good for you for getting past the back.
For the front, work one set of 17sts, drop the ball of yarn, pick up the second ball and knit 4sts. That's working 4sts past the neck opening. Then you can follow the w&t.

I'm confused. Let me elaborate more and maybe the full pic will come into view.
After I've picked up those live stitches, row 1: k17, Join second ball of yarn. Bind off 30, k17.
What i did was join that second ball of yarn after the k17. Taken that second ball yarn and bound off the 30 sts and k17.
Row 2: purl.
I purled each side separately with each ball.
Now the row 3&4 dilemma.
Does that make more sense or did I do it wrong?

Sounds like you've done it perfectly. Now you want to:
Rows 3&4 : work to 4 sts past neck opening, w&t.
So knit across 17sts with the first ball of yarn, drop that strand, pick up the strand from the second ball and knit 4sts. That'll take you 4sts past the neck opening, w&t. Again, like the back it sounds like you'll be working one side for a few rows.

Interesting!! So I'm working it like one row...but separately.. huh! I thought that might be it but it seemed strange. Ok.. I'm going for it. . Thank you! !!
