Wrong number of stitches?
Hello! So I got a pattern for a baby panda hat on stitchnation.. I'd give a link to the pattern but the website seems to be down.. I tried uploading a photo but it didn't work well. If you really need a photo I'll try again or a different way to show you. But this is what the pattern says:

Cast on 48 sts.
Work 6 rows in Garter st.
Next road (inc): * K3, m1, k3; repeat from * across - 56 sts.

It says I'll have 56 sts? But I kept ending up with 63, I was wondering if I was doing it wrong, but when I wrote it out and added everything together it adds 15.. Which does give me 63.. am I just missing something or being weird? Or did they just write it wrong maybe?

But then it says to work 4 and a half inches in stokinette. After that it says:

Shape back:
Row 1: * K5, k2tog; repeat from * to end - 48 sts.

BUT. Since I have 63 sts, when I decrease on this row. I end up with 54. I have no idea what to do :/

By my count you should only make 8 stitches (start with 48, then you'll knit 3, m1, knit 3 a total of 8 times to get to the 48 stitches) which would get you to the 56 across.

Here's how I worked it out on my end -- maybe this will help you (if I did it right )

Each time you k3 m1 k3, you're knitting 6 stitches off your cast on, so you should have:

k3m1k3 = 6 sts
k3m1k3 = 12 sts
k3m1k3 = 18 sts
k3m1k3 = 24 sts
k3m1k3 = 30 sts
k3m1k3 = 36 sts
k3m1k3 = 42 sts
k3m1k3 = 48 sts (finish the row)

You'll do that 8 times, which will make 8 new stitches, giving you the final 56 stitches.

I hope that helps!

I think I see the problem - it's something I do.

Try: K3, *m1, k6* repeat between * * to last 3 sts, k last 3 sts - I think the math comes out right then.

You have a k3 before and after each m1 which ends up giving you 6 sts between increases, the 1st 3 sts and last 3 sts giving you 6 there. I find the the way it's written makes it confusing.

If/when you can post a link, please do!

That's great! We came up with the same solution, worded it differently, and between the 2, one of them should make it clear. At least I think we more or less said the same thing.

Oh my!! I see my problem now! I'm so silly. I was doing K3, m1, k3, m1. I realize now it should be K3, m1, k3, k3, m1. Okay. Thank you! I feel a little silly now :P

I understand. I've been there, done that! The pattern could have been written more clearly.

I just want to clarify something, so I'm making the matching baby mittens, and it says:

Cast on 2 sts, place next 8 sts on holder for thumb, k to end.

I'm on dps obviously. So I'm casting two sts onto the fourth free needle, right? and knitting behind the 8 sts on the holder? I figure I'm right, but I just want to double check with the all knowing :P

Because later for when it says to work on the thumb, it says:

K8 sts from holder, then k2 sts across cast on sts where hand joins above - 10 sts. Work even in Stockinette Stitch for 1"

That's the right idea. If it's easy for you to cast the 2sts onto the free needle then go ahead and use that. For me, it would be easier to cast the 2sts onto the third needle, the one the working yarn is hanging off of. That way, there's no worry about the 2sts being as close as possible to the other sts.
Either way, you cast on and then continue the round.
I hope we get to see the hat and mittens when you're finished. They look adorable. Do post a photo if you'd like.
