Midnight scarbon help
I've knitted this twice now and each time without fail, the hood is not right, I am following the pattern EXACTLY as it says to and I keep ending up screwing it up. I ended up with the right front side longer than the left, to few stitches after I got to row 71.. i need help, please. can anyone tell me what on earth I am doing wrong or if i'm doing it correctly but the pattern is messed up? I tried contacting the person who made this pattern last month and i found out many other people have too but this woman just doesn't answer anyone back. this is the URL: craftsbystarlight.com/knit/knit-headwear/item/296-midnightscarbon

It seems that by row 35 you should have 62sts. You slip 24 unworked, reattach yarn and start working on the center 14sts, leaving 24sts unworked as you turn. Rows 35-71 decrease 20sts.
I'd really have to put this on needles to tell if the pattern is ok. The fact that others are questioning makes me wonder if there isn't a mistake somewhere. How many sts are you missing in row 71?

I recounted and I still get 38 sts to be dec... Am I counting wrong? rows 45-70 have 13 dec rows the rest are purl rows. I think it's after that because I don't have a problem until the hat is almost done. Can you please tell me if this would mess it up "Row 82: C6F- but as follows- 3 sts on CN in front, k3, place sts from CN on left needle, K2, k2tog, turn." This is where I think I mess up. I found a site and there are a few people who have issues while doing this, I was told there was a part that said something similar to row 82 but the numbers I have I just checked from the original site and I have what it says they should be.

You're absolutely right about dec 38sts, sorry for the confusion. Row 82 decreases and shapes at the cable by knitting the last cable st and the next stitch together. That just dec one stitch each repeat of row 82. So you've gotten past row 71. Are you still off some number of sts?

It's good, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't totally insane with the dec. Ok well, I did the hood twice and this morning I tore out the whole thing and I'm just starting to re-knit it. As far as I know, with my husband watching me and my own talking each row aloud while doing it, I did it exactly as stated... I come up with the incorrect amount no matter what I do. Shouldn't I have 18 sts total before beg row 82? and I should end up with 11 sts for binding off?

OK, I may be off a stitch on this but it looks like you cast on 36 and inc 26sts (62sts total on needles), dec 38sts (24sts total after row 71), dec 12sts (12sts total after row 81) and then dec 7sts (5sts total after row 92).
Did you cast off the 6 cable sts on row 81? That gives you 12sts before beg row 82.

I did exactly all of that except yen i did row 81 I ended with a total 6 sts dec instead of 5 sts because rows 72, 74, 76 & 78 have the dec 1 then on row 81 it's K3TOG which landed me to lose 6 sts before casting off the other 6 cabled needles. We both ended up with the same 12 but the patt says I should have 13.

I agree with the 12sts dec from rows 72 through 81 (including 2sts dec for the k3tog) and then bind of 6 cable sts. I wouldn't worry about a single st over or under at this point. The final sts are bound off and I don't think it'll make a difference.
This patttern cries out for stitch totals at the end of every other row or so.

Right and I know it's supposed to have extra sts I just don't know why my hood is ending up uneven with the left being shorter than the right even after aligning the fronts right before I seam then together. Can you tell approx how many sts I'm supposed to end up with at the end?

I'll take a look again tonight and see if I can figure out why one side is longer than the other and how many sts to end with.

Have you seen this video? It may help, especially toward its end.
