question about substitution
my grandmother has a pattern that calls for 10 needle and worsted weight, shed like to use a size 2 and sporting yarn. in past i was able to find conversion numbers but its been a long time and reading old forum posts im confused , i have no experience with knitting.

shes working on a 1 size fits all shawl pattern starts 26 sts K2,P2,K2 for ribbing shes having problems finding the right number of sts to match her wrist

any help would be greatly appreciated

The best thing to do is to knit a swatch or small sample with the sport weight yarn and size 2 needles. You can see how many sts/inch and use that number to convert the pattern. You'll also be able to tell whether you like the knit fabric or if it's too stiff or tight.
The same goes for the ribbing. If you (or your grandmother) knit a sample of k2p2 rib, you can measure it against the wrist and see how it would fit and haw many sts are needed.
