Since I hold the working yarn in my left hand (Continental knitting) that doesn't seem odd to me at all. I don't know if working the first row Continental then switching to English will be a problem. Maybe you would be more comfortable always holding it in your left hand. One way isn't better than the other except that one way will probably be easier for you and so for you that method is better. Knowing how to knit both ways is good.
