The gloves are working out wonderfully well. You can pick up more sts than you need and then decrease as has been suggested and you might also try knitting into the back loop of the sts at each end of the picked up area (where the picked up sts join the held sts). The twisted stitch will also help tighten up any hole.

If you can pick up extra stitches, then decrease to the required number. Also you can use the tail of yarn from closing up the top of finger to close up the holes at the base of finger. I do that all the time.
