Decreasing rounds for modified hat pattern...HELP!
I'm making a hat for my son using a pattern he helped pick out(I figure he's more likely to wear it if he helped pick out what it looked like). The body is 7" so I need to start my decrease rounds. My problem: to make the hat fit his head with the yarn I'm using, I had to modify the pattern slightly. Instead of casting on 85 as pattern called for I cast on 95.

Naturally if I do the decreases as written in pattern I will have too many stitches left over...so what do I do? Add 10 extra decrease rows and risk the shaping being off? K2tog repeatedly once I finish the decreases per pattern?

This hat has about 4 inches 2x3 ribbing and is stockinette till the decreases. Any suggestions?

I always try to cast on a multiple of 10 so decreases are k8, k2tog for the first decrease row. The next row is knit even (no decreases). When you decrease this way you get a nicely rounded top and it ends up taking about 2 inches. If you want to do it this way you can decrease 5 somewhat evenly and then start decreasing.

Or if you want to decrease faster and do t mind the slightly gathered look on top you can decrease one so you have 94 and then k2tog around the hat, knit one row even, k2tog around etc.

Does that work?

Now why couldn't I think of that?!?

If I were to decrease the 5 to bring my stitch count down to 90, I'd still have that nicely shaped crown, right? And that 5 could be decreased all in the same row...one more round shouldn't add TOO much more length to the hat either. Perfect! Thanks so much!

Right! And if you think it's getting too long just start doing decrease rows more often.

Coming along beautifully now. Hoping it'll actually be done tomorrow...if I can get the boy up early enough to try it on before I do any more decreasing rounds. (Love magic loop for that purpose!) I'm AquaDolphin on Ravelry if you'd like to see pictures of it when I finally get it done.
