You can modify the pattern you linked to by determining the number of sts/inch that you get with your main yarn and needles. if you can determine the measurement around your granddaughter's calf then use the sts/inch to determine the number of sts you'll need for the body of the leggings.

I will try doing as you say by determining the #of stitches. However I noticed that this pattern says it is 5 inches wide and the other warmers I made for her were 8 inches wide at the calf. By my girl is only 3 1/2, and the one in my link seems like a teenager. Not sure how to gauge that one.
