Pattern help!
Knitting my first baby sweater and I need help understanding the pattern. Can some please interpret this into a very simple form? Thank you so much!

Divide for fronts
Next row K36(41:47:52:58) sts, leave these sts on a spare needle, cast off next 16(18:18:20:20) sts, k to end. Cont on last set of 36(41:47:52:58) sts for left front. Work 5(5:7:5:7) rows straight, ending at front edge.
Next row (RS) K3, m1, k to end. Work 3 rows straight. Rep the last 4 rows 2(3:3:4:4) times more and the inc row once more. 40(46:52:58:64) sts.

Does "cont on last set" mean I need to knit them back onto the needle my other stitches are on or leave them on a separate needle? And what does "Work 5(5:7:5:7) rows straight, ending at front edge." Mean? Do I just knit 5 rows because I've been doing the stockinet st for the whole sweater.

You've knit the first set of sts, 36sts for the smallest size for example and placed them on a holder or another needle. Then you cast off the next 16sts and now you have 36sts left on the working needles. Work the next direction on those same 36sts. They should still be on your working needles.
Work 5 rows straight means to knit those rows in stockinette as you have been doing but without any shaping, no increases or decreases.

Yes, exactly. You'll work with those sts at the top of the third column in the pattern (Right Front).

Okay I have done that now I'm stuck on this.
Sleeve shaping
Cast off 5(6:7:8:9) sts at beg of next and 3 foll alt rows. 20(22:24:26:28) sts. Work 8(10:10:12:12) rows straight.
What do they mean by at the beginning of next and 3 following alternative rows? Does it mean every other row because I'm still working stockinet sts.

Yes, keep working stockinette stitch. Cast off sts at the biginning of the next row (this should be at the sleeve edge) and then every other row. You'll cast off 4 times total. This cast off will look similar to the cast on that you did when you started the sleeves. The cast off and cast on edges will form the underarm seam.
