Baby Girls Dress back question
I am knitting this dress. I have completed the front.
Instructions for front neck and shoulder read as follows.
Armholes-cast off 4sts next 2 rows 66 sts on needle work to 4 1/2"
Neck - k21, k2 tog leave remaining sts on holder. Turn working on 22 sts continue in st stitch decreasing one stitch at neck edge till you have 18 stitches. continue till bodice measurers 5 1/2 inches.
Shoulder at armhole cast off 9 stitches 2X. leave stitches on holder for neck edge and do the same on the other side. I did all this for the front.
The back is what I am confused with.
Back work as for front until sts are cast off for armhole (66 sts on needle)
Back opening 1st row K36 leave remaining 30 on holder. Turn
Knit 6 stitches for border purl to end. continue for 6 more rows.
9th row put in buttonhole. Then 2 more buttonholes every 9 rows
HERE IS WHAT IS CONFUSING ME
Shape neck and shoulder as given for front

I did not decrease on neck edge because of 6 stitch border for button holes. So now I am finished and I have 36 stitches on needle? If I decrease like front my back will be much longer than the front so that does not make sense to me. Something is missing in the translation. My piece measures about 2 rows before shoulder decreases. If I follow instructions and decrease 18 stitches for shoulder I still have 18 stitches left on my needle.

It goes on to read Step 4 finishing up
With right side of work join wool and do the same number of rows as other side ending back opening.

**Then it says: Next row knit 5 (k2 tog,k2) twice for neck and leave these 11 stitches on st holder, K2tog,k21 working remaining 22 sts continue to other side.

I think I just figured it out. I think the last paragraph(**) is what I need to do for neck. That would give me the right amount of stitches.
Then I will cast off for shoulder.

Let me know If you agree. I have attached a picture of the dress

Yes, that sounds right. The back neck is usually not as gradual a decrease as the front so these directions will accomplish that dec. Adorable dress, btw.
