binding off ribbing

I'm almost finished knitting a 2x2 ribbed scarf but now I'm stuck. I need to bind off but I don't know how to go about doing it. Do I bind off in the ribbed pattern (switching the yarn back and forth to the front and back when it does in the pattern), or do I bind off the way I would with a normal straight knit scarf (keeping the yarn at the back the whole time). Help!

My favorite BO for ribbing is the first one you described. Knit the knit stitch, and bind it off; purl the purl stitch, and bind it off. There's a picture and video on the BO page ("Basic Knit BO, alternating with Basic Purl BO").

Yep, I agree with Amy and always bind-off "in pattern." It looks neater and isn't really any more difficult.

Me too on binding off in pattern...so the bind off blends and lays the same as the rest of the pattern.
