Baby/Toddler Poncho --EASY - Page 4

Here's a photo of the purple poncho I made for my new granddaughter. I used Red Heart's Jeweltones, which is pretty and glittery! (The yarn is discontinued, but you can find it on eBay.)

If I were you, I would measure from the edge of her neck to the edge of her wrist, and you'll know how wide each rectangle should be. Do a gauge swatch and figure out how many stitches per inch you knit, then cast on the number you need.

I just finished my little poncho. :D I made it for my friend's little girl. She is about 2 1/2 year old so I made 9"x16" size. I hope it fits her. We'll see.

I used Lion Brand Homespun "Boston Rose" yarn. For the edge, I used Bernat Boa "Love Bird" yarn. Since I'm not good at crocheting at all, I knitted the fringe about 1 inch wide (4 stitches with size 13 needles) and then sewed it to the edge of the poncho!

I am currently working on the poncho for my soon to be 5 year old niece to give as a birthday gift. I am using my students in my classroom as models to figure out how big to make.

I followed, carolina red's advice and measured from neck to wrist. The width of my rectangle is about 14 inches. I haven't gotten very far yet on the length.

My work in progress

I am using Lion Brand Yarn Color Waves in Mai Tai. Size 9 needles.

Can someone tell me what you would do (ie: how many stitches/ and length) for a 4.5 month old baby girl? I have attempted a baby sweater and poncho from another site and both have turned out right according to the pattern but no way is it going to fit the baby.

I also would like to know if I can do stocking stitch (pearl/knit) instead of garter stitch the entire poncho.

I'm new to this group and to knitting. It's been a great learning experience and now I have something to help with stress. YEA!

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the gauge is for the toddler poncho. I don't have any lion brand homespun, but I have tons of read heart wortsed weight. Will this make a big difference?

You could always make another one with smaller needles or larger needles or change to a thicker or thinner yarn. That would make it a different size.

Yeah, it will make a difference, but not huge. The red heart yarn is worsted, and the homespun is bulky. The red heart yarn would make a smaller poncho. You could follow directions for a larger size, and it might work out just right! Good luck!
