Help - Interesting Shawl with Ribbon

Hiya...

I've decided to make a shawl using Crystal Palace "Party" ribbon. ("Tulip Petals" - i think it'll be lovely!)

The pattern i have is simple:

size 13 needles

cast on 7 stiches
knit, inc 1 on both sides
repeat until garment is desired size


Basically, it's going to be a large triangle. :( Sounds kinda boring.

I was wondering if there was a way to kinda jazz it up? (I'm a novice and a scientist - creativity isn't my strong suit!)

Beads? (i'm game)
Elongated stitches? (sounds interesting but i didn't know if that was possible when you're increasing each row)
Fringe? (yes, was planning on that).

Any ideas??

I'm making this for my sister because she has a fancy-schmancy luncheon to go to and i think she's feeling kinda frumpy and unhappy about having to attend. I want her to be the belle of the place and have something gorgeous that no one else has!

I just did a sweater with an elongated stitch using a tape yarn and liked it a lot. It really shows off the fiber, and makes the knitting go quickly, too.

So, there's my vote!

There was this episode of Knitty Gritty where they took an otherwise average shawl & fancied it up by hooking coordinating silk ribbon strips into it every once in a while...

I liked it, it ended up reminding me of the costumes from Cats! If you were making a shawl more delicate than the one in the show, I bet you could still incorporate the same idea with either thinner ribbon or bobbles of some other sort?

I think i'm going to try the elongated stich route and just increase on the non-elongated rows. Hopefully it won't look to wonky. I suppose it's just one of those "try it and see" kind of things. I only have a week to get it done and i have loads of end-of-semester grading to do! ICK!
