Make sure your working yarn tension is good.. you may need to wrap the yarn around your finger once more than usual.
If you can, don't use metal needles. Bamboo is great for cotton because it has a bit of grab, which keeps the stitches from slipping around too much.
Cotton yarn doesn't stretch as much as some others, so it's easy to knit too tightly. If you can't seem to get your needle into a stitch, try to loosen up your tension.
I think knitting with cotton is an aquired taste. I've never really minded it so much, but since I live in Florida, it's a necessity, so I've adapted.
