Simple socks, great for a beginner.

I'm using Khatmandu Aran (merino wool) instead of the required yarn. Same guage.

Progress pics will be slow going, as I forgot to bring the software for my digicam. DOH!

Hey Denise, I already did these socks and found that episode of Knitty Gritty to help me soooo much when learning to knit socks...it's as if a lite bulb of understanding went off over my head when that show 1st aired...I've been making socks like crazy ever since!!
I'm sorry that I can't do this sock knit along with u all at this time bc I'm busily working on an afghan for a wedding (may 14) gift. So I must concentrate on it!! Goodness, goodness and I just got sock yarn in the mail Sat. that's ready for dying and knitting....and I can't do it now :( ....but I will be stopping by to see what everyone else is doing til I finish this afghan (or just get TIRED of working on it and have to take a break for 2 or 3 days and then I'll do a pair of socks!!! ). I love to see what socks others r doing!

Don't worry about not being able to join me right now, I'm sure they'll take me a while! And, I plan on making a few pair for gifts down the road this year. So, we'll have plenty of time

Oh I want to do these! I seem to be a one-thing-at-a-time knitter however and I'm in the middle of my Honeymoon Cami, so it may be a short while before I start. I have some yarn already, but I'm not sure about gauge...

I had to frog these, so I'll be starting over... I should have done a gauge swatch. Any tips on how to do that in the round?

My first try sock looked WAYYYY to big, so I frogged it. :(

Hey welcome back! You've been missed!

A sock-knitter friend of mine keeps a perpetual sock gauge swatch on the dpns so now she has a long tube of swatches connected together. Most of her yarns are the same weight, so the same needles, give or take a size, work for her. YMMV

I plan to start my own sock tube swatch once I get the right size dpns. It's kind of neat to see all the past socks she's done in one tube. I guess she can afford to have the extra set of needles. Supposedly you want to swatch in the round if your project is to be done in the round.

I read some cool instructions on swatching for knitting in the round here on the forums....but of course I can't find them here, but I did find them on another site! It's very ...

To make a flat no purl stockinette swatch (aka faux in-the-round swatch) with circular needles or double-pointed needles:

Instructions: Cast on a likely number of sts to equal approx 5" and knit a few rows of garter stitch to prevent curling. Now you're going to switch to faux in-the-round stockinette. Knit a complete right side row. Slide the sts to the opposite end of the circular/dpn and place that needle in your left hand. Strand the yarn very loosely behind the swatch and knit another row. Repeat until you swatch is at least 3" - 4" tall and finish off with a few more rows of garter stitch. Look ma, no purls!

This is a lot like making i-cord but you don't pull that stranded yarn tight, it has to be VERY loose to avoid distorting the swatch when it's being measured. The edge stitches are sloppy and must be avoided when measuring for gauge but that's OK, this is a swatch and not a work of art.

Optional: You can cut the yarn at the end of every row to avoid stranding it behind the swatch but that renders the yarn almost useless for shortage emergencies.
