Hooked on Gorgeous Yarns

For yarn that knits up to 5.5 sts =1" with size 5-6 size needles, how much yardage for a nice sized scarf? Anyone have an idea? This is always a tough one for me whenever I find beautiful yarns & may not have a pattern in mind but don't want to miss out on some great yarn...so there I am...I know this happens to others so any tips on what works for you??
