Help w/Berroco Pattern
Hi,
I just want to say that I've been lurking for the last month and am really impressed with this site! While I learned to knit when I was ten, I never completed anything until recently (I'm 32) . Anyway, this site has helped me tremendously and I have found the answers to most of my questions by searching the posts here.

Now, I am attempting my first piece of adult clothing. The Sharda from Berrocos book #234 Leisure Class and I could use some help and was hoping that one of you kind knitters could help out.

The pattern says to do this for the bodice shape:

Bind of 43 sts, dec 8 sts evenly spaced across;
k76 sts, dec 15 sts evenly spaced across;
Bind off remaining 43 sts, dec 8 sts evenly spaced across - 61 sts left of needle. Purl 1 row.

I'm confused since first of all, I read here (another post) that you shouldn't bind off on both ends in one row. Also, where it says to dec, does it want you to dec over the next 76 sts? If so, where do you dec the other 8 sts since it says to bind of the remaining 43 first?

I hope I've explained the problem good enough - so far I'm not really digging this patter but am determined to make it work and finish it.

Thanks so much for the help in advance!

I'm assuming that you're not knitting in the round. If you bind off at the end of the row, you're going to have one stitch left at the end of your bindoff. If this pattern is not knitted in the round, I think it's a pattern error and you should be binding off at the beginning of the row. You can contact Berroco - they are responsive.

I'm confused also. Did you type this exactly as it is in the book?
Ususally when they say decrease evenly across they tell you a number of stitches to decrease from.

If this is exactly as it appears in the book, then yes, something is missing. If not, we could help decipher it if you copy it exactly.

Thanks Carolyn - thats what I thought also.

Ingrid - yes, unfortunately I did type it exactly as it is printed in the book. Also, I just noticed too that immediately after this row it gives instructions to dec two more rows on the right side but doesn't give instructions on what to do for the WS rows in between. I assume that I should purl the WS rows?

I did also take Carolyns advice and sent Berroco an email just now, so hopefully they can shed some light on this also.

I'm even wondering if there is a way to just rewrite the instructs. for the bodice myself - I'm just not sure how to do that. All it is really is a triangle that sits at the top of the rectangle like this:

Sometimes these things take a while to sink in. I think I know what they want now.

As you're binding off the first 43 stitches, you also decrease 8 stitches as you're doing this.

Then, on the next 76 stitches, you decrease 15 stitches evenly across.

Then you decrease 8 stitches as you bind off the last 43 stitches.

Then Purl 1 row ( I think that's the one you thought was missing)

You're decreasing as you bind off to tighten up the top edge.

Does this make sense?

I would knit two together to do the decreases and then incorporate these in the bind off.

Oh - now that makes more sense. Thank you so much Ingrid!
I'll give that a try!

Have a great day ladies.
