The instructions I gave for doubleknitting are correct when you are using only 1 ball of yarn at a time. If you substitute purling for the slipping, you will not get doubleknitting - you'll get k1,p1 ribbing or seed stitch (depending upon whether the knits and purls are stacked or staggered).

The yarn in front doesn't wrap around any stitches. It just carries the yarn between the stitches first on one side, then on the other.
