help with knit stitch from beginner

I am having a lot of problems with my knit stitch. A bunch of knit stitches put together are supposed to look like kind of like v's, right? why are mine looking like squiggly lines, something like this : ~~~~~~~. to me, it looks more like a purl stitch. I have watched the videos on this site numerous times, and I cannot figure out what is going on. if you could give me any help or advice, I would really appreciate it!

in order to get the Vs you have to combine the purls and the knits. basically you have to alternate knit purl every other row. if you are doing entirely one stitch you are going to just have the bumps. if you aren't doing any purl stitches your work looks exactly the way it is suppose to!

Brendajos is right. What you're doing when you knit every stitch, every row is getting garter stitch. The back of a knit stitch is a purl stitch and vice versa, so when you knit a row and then flip it over, you're now looking at purls. On either side you see one row of knit and one row of purl.

In order to get all the v's on one side (which is stockinette stitch), you knit one row, then purl one row. This way all the knits end up on one side and all the purls end up on the other.
