The ladies that started the group are collecting the face cloths and soap and sending it on at their own expense. All you have to do is mail the cloth/s and soap to them and they take care of the rest. If you go to the link there is a small intro but if you go ahead and join, they send you an email with all the details.
It really is quick and inexpensive to do. Plus, I know there is a LOT of cotton ease around out there
They said they'd also accept small stuff:
"I am hearing that they are also asking for small soft baby toys, crayons and coloring books. We will be more than happy to accept those items too!" So you could make a knitted bear or something of that nature if you would rather (talk to Glen or Silver...I know they have been discussing stuffed animal patterns lately).
I almost finished my first one last night in front of the TV. I cast on at the beginning of a Rome documentary and at the end I only had a couple of inches to go.
If you don't want to think about a pattern, you could just do garter stitch or practice some new stitch you would like to learn. I found this one through Ingrid's link: http://www.knittingknonsense.com/DW_cloth.html
It's an easy pattern that becomes mindless. This is in Sugar n Cream.
