tacking steeked edges on fair isle sweater

I have just finished a fair isle cardigan sweater. I was wondering what the proper way to secure the steeked edges to the sweater. I saw it somewhere, but can't find it again. Any tips for fair isle knitting would be welcome. This sweater is my first steeked sweater. I did a yolk sweater and a few fair isle hat, but that is the extent of my experience.

I know a bunch of people who have done steeked sweaters and I don't think any of them sewed the edge down. They've all used a wool that felts so wearing and washing is bound to firm up that edge.
