Kntting at the same time

Hi there-
I am a somewhat new knitter and trying to tackle a project other than a scarf. I chose a shawl/poncho type deal. I grasp every part of the pattern until it says to knit both sides at the same time. That has me confused, I just don't quite get what that means or how it's done.
