Worthy Knitting Causes---Roll Call

In the past I have done some knitting for www.specialknittingforces.org who collect a variety of knit and crochet items to be sent to orphans of war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Being a pacifist at heart, this organization appeals to me. However they seem to be stalled in delivery options now due to the health of one of their primary volunteers. In the meantime, I am looking for some similarly focused organization to which to send my items.

I find one of the joys of this kind of knitting is the option to use up those pesky left-overs. Who cares if the left sleeve is red with green and yellow stripes and the right one solid navy...the back purple and orange and the two fronts each different? Some sweater is better than none!

This might be a fun "roll call". For what charitable organizations do you knit? Any maybe you could tell us why that one?

A terrific on-line group is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/All_Crafts_4_Charity - I belong to this group and every month they choose a different charity, which is a terrific idea given that there are so many worthwhile charities out there!

Last year, there was an organization at my school that knit stuff for a local homeless shelter. It was back when I was mainly crocheting so I made them a few hats. Unfortunately, the organizers didn't manage to get it off the ground this year. I'm hoping it'll start up again because it gets cold here in the winter.

One of my favorites is binky patrol. www.binkypatrol.org I have also knitted for warm up america. Warm up America is a nice one because you can submit squares, or you can volunteer to put squares together.

I've made littel newborn hats for the local hospitals. They are quick and so cute!

I've just started knitting, but knitting/crocheting for a cause is a great idea. My stepmom makes afghans every year for local charities. Last year she made something like 50!

This year she had more help from her crafts group.

I'll be watching this thread for ideas.

My first blanket went to Project Linus. I understand the local coordinator adds a Linus label so the recipient knows it was made to help make them feel better. And I think she is supposed to get back to me to let me know where my blanket goes. In Sacramento, that could be UC Davis Pediatrics, the Shriner's Children's Hospital, WEAVE, Loaves & Fishes and I forget who else.
