question regarding picking up stitches
Ok quick question as this is my first time picking up stitches on a horizontal row. I watched the video, but am still a bit confused as to how this will work on my project. here's the exact wording of what they're telling me to do:

On round 12 pick up one cast on stitch with left hand needle with WS facing each other. K tog first 2 sts (cast-on stitch plus 1st knit stitch) on left hand needle. Complete round 12, picking up corresponding cast-on stitch and k it tog with the next knit stitch.

Note: Here the 11 rounds you have completed are doubled over to create a hem that is approximately six rounds tall.

So how exactly do I do this? The general instructions in my book say this starts with a new ball of yarn (although it doesn't say that in my project specifically), so am I supposed to cut my current yarn and then wind it back in? Do I add these new stitches to the cast on row and then at the same time knit into them? I just want to be sure I'm doing this right. Thanks for any help!

This is very different than picking up regular stitches, since you are attaching two pieces.

In this case, if your yarn is in the right place to begin the work, use it. If not, cut it and start it here.

Usually stitches are picked up with the right hand needle, then the needle is turned and worked the other way.

In this case, you pick up a stitch through the cast off edge onto your empty needle held in your left hand. Once that loop is on the needle, you knit it together with the live stitch on your other needle.

I'm picturing this with your needles held parallel, points facing the same way, with wrong sides facing. The side with the cast ons I think should be in the back with the live stitches in the front.

Does that sound right?

success!!! thanks so much Ingrid. I'm sure I'll be back when I get to the double pointed needle part. It will be my first time trying that as well and I'm a bit nervous to say the least.
