steam blocking

I am working on a pattern that requires steam blocking to flatten the scarf. It is curling at this point. How do I steam block?

You pin it down to the dimensions you want and use the steam from your iron. Or if you have one of those house-cleaning steamers, I've seen people use those, too.

I'm not sure it applies to all yarn, but something I read about steam blocking said if you use an iron, be careful not to let it touch the fabric. It you used a steamer though this wouldn't be an issue.
