CO at the end of a row

I'm a beginner trying to make a case for my iPod..
The pattern says to work in stockinette stich for 4" and to end knitting the row...I got that far, but then it calls for a cast on of 8 stitches at the end of the needle..
How do I do that??

I find that a Backward Loop works well for this.
