Baby cashmerino cable hat

i'm at the point of decreasing on my cable hat for my nephew. The Shaping instructions refer to patt 4, and patt 8 and patt 6..this is a cable/moss stitch hat and i'm completely confused as to what patt 4 and patt 8 means (all within one decrease row) it then instructs me to work 5 rows straight.

what does patt mean? the cable moss stitch design is a 4 row pattern...so i'm unclear as to how to proceed.

It's hard to say without seeing the pattern. Is in on line?

My guess is that each section of the hat, whether its a cable or the pattern between the cable may have been given a number? How many separate sections are in the hat? If there are 8, then that's it. If not, more information would help.

I just googled the hat and saw the pattern picture for it. It does look like it has 8 sections. Yes? Am I off in left field?

there's 6 cables and 7 moss stitch sections. i'll copy the 1st dec row instructions:

Patt 4, work 2tog, *patt 8, work 2tog, patt 6, work 2tog; rep from* to last 14 sts, patt 8, work 2 tog, patt 4. Work 5 rows straight.

the cable/moss stitch pattern is 4 rows. It says "the 4 rows from the patt and are repeated throughout".

I understand that patt8 means 8 stitches in the established pattern but I don't understand how to continue. So in this example, the 1st row is:

(p1, k1) 3 times, p1, *k6, p2, k1, (p1, k1) 4 times, p1, repeat from * to last 13...

So the first row decrease is:

Patt4, work 2tog,*patt8, work 2tog, patt6, work 2tog, repeat from *...
work 5 rows straight

My question is how do I continue patt8?

Is it p1,k1, p1, k1,( which is patt4) p2 tog do I continue the pattern from where I was? So my next stitches to patt8 would be: k1, p1, k6?

And is continue straight mean I continue the pattern?

I hope this makes sense.

Patt 4 is p1, k1, p1, k1
work 2tog uses the next p1, k1
patt 8 is p1, k6, p1
work 2tog uses the next p1, k1
patt6 is p1, k1,p1,k1,p1,k1
work 2tog uses the next p1, k1
and you keep on using the sts that are from the row before.
Work straight means to continue without any decreases, in this case.

One more thought, the sequence of p1,k1,p1,k1 etc. depends on where you are in the moss st. For those sts the most reliable guide is to look at the sts in the previous row and decide if the sequence is k1,p1,k1 or p1,k1,p1.
