Cast on size 11 needles, knit on size 17 needles?

I am planning on starting a slip stitch pattern scarf and the directions are completely confusing me. It states to cast on and do k1, p1 ribbing for 3" on size 11 needles, but to complete the rest of the pattern on size 17 needles. How can stitches from size 11 needles possibly fit onto size 17 needles and why the needle change? Any ideas? Maybe make the stitches really loose right before I switch needles? Maybe I can do the whole thing on 11 or 17. Oh well, we'll see. Thanks and Happy New Year.

well there is likely going to be some forming between the stitches. i would say that you are going to want to just knit from the 11s on to the 17s. it is going to be tight but i think it would be easier to do it that way than to try to fit them on first.
