! As someone who spent several years knitting nothing more than the occasional dish cloth, I never expected to actually knit *anything* and the opportunity to learn to do this has been very satisfying (and fun, of course!)
The pattern for the cabled purse is from a class, I will try to find out if our instructor minds having it posted. Better yet, she may have it on her blog, so I'll ask. It's actually very easy, just a knitted rectangle (you can place your cables any way you like, or use any other decorative stitch). Then measure the rectangle for the lining while it's still flat. Seam up the sides, just like you would the sides of a sweater. Use matching yarn to wrap the cast-on and cast-off ends onto the handles using a tapestry needle and sewing through each stitch: voila!
