Changing Yarns
so a pattern I want to do calls for Bernat Satin Yarn for this pattern and since no store anywhere near me sells this I want to use a different yarn. I know there's a LYS close but I can't afford the stuff there, so I need 'department store' yarn. How do I know what other kind of yarn to use?! I know nothing about how to choose a different kind of yarn than what the pattern calls for. It's going to be for a baby so it needs to be soft.

You could try to find the yarn you want online, but I like to actually see and touch yarn before I buy, so online is best for something you're already familiar with.

To substitute, I look up the recommended needle size, st/in, and yardage info for the yarn called for, then try to find a yarn that most closely matches.

Good luck and happy hunting!

It says that it's a medium weight yarn, so any worsted weight should work.

Thank you very much ladies!

Yeah I can't buy yarn online, which is probably a good thing since I'm almost more addicted to the all the yarn pretties than knitting itself. Lol

I've used it. I would say it's very similar to RH Soft or Caron's Simply Soft. Any soft WW would be a suitable sub IMO.
