Circular knitting needle size

Hi: I apologize if this has already been asked but I was wondering how you determine what size circular needles to get when knitting a sweater.

My sweater is a medium and the neck ribbing is supposed to be 3 1/4." I've been using size 8 needles for the straight stiching.

Do you mean you need a circular to knit the neck in the round? A 16" length is usually good for that, and you'd use whatever size you used on any other ribbing in the pattern.

You're absolutely right - I need to knit in the round. I'll try what you've said and see how it goes.

BTW - Since I'm new to using forums, here's an etiquette question. Is it assumed that any advice is gratefully taken and I shouldn't clog up the forums with thank yous? Because I'm really thankful for this site and everyone who teaches me new things about this great craft!!

I have a general question. What is the standard practice for figuring out how long your circular knitting needles should be? I take that the needle size is whatever the straight needles are.

Basically, you have to remember that the circular size can't be larger than the circumference of your work. It can, and should, be smaller. If the stitches fit all the way around, and they're not stretched, then it will work. I prefer using needles a bit shorter, because I don't have to push the stitches around as often.
