Shaping shoulders and neck

Hey again, still working on the pinon shell and I'm to the point where I'm shaping the shoulders and neck, and the instructions say to bind off 6 stitches at the beginning of the next 4 rows, 7 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows, AT THE SAME TIME, bind off center 23 stitches and working both sides at the same time dec 1 stitch at each neck edge once.

I think I've got the first part down, that's clear enough, but what bothers me is the "at the same time" bit and working both sides at the same time. What does it mean at the same time? and with working both sides, wouldn't that cause strands of yarn to be taken across the neck?

You have to have a strand from each shoulder once you bind off those center stitches.

You'll be doing the neck decreases at the same time as you're doing the 7 st shoulder shaping.

so, putting on a second strand of yarn for the shoulders would be a good idea, IE working two balls of yarn?

It's not only a good idea--it's a necessity. As you said, otherwise you'd have a strand running across the neck part.

I have a feeling that after the Sweater Along, they'll be a lot more people who can translate sweater directions.

heh, well I wasn't doing that, but the tips are valuable nonetheless. Anyway, looks like I messed up and learned how to do something new all in the same breath. the directions that I had put on here were not to bind off 23 stitches, but rather 27. so I just learned out to take out bound off stitches, one by one. But, I'm able to go back and bind 'em off again.
