Which CO in middle of pattern?
I've started my first sweater today and I've gotten to the point where it says

"at the end of the increase row, cast on xx sts, join the work into a round...etc."

What I don't know is what CO to use. I always use long tail (or provisional) CO and obviously neither of those will work here. Do I use knit on or cable or what?

I would use the knitting-on method. You could also use the backward loop, but the stitches may tend to be kinda loose.
