help -hood for toddler sweater
I have knit the hood according to the instructions - it is a rectangle (42 stitiches are on a holder in the middle) 60 stitches on each needle on either side of those - the instructions say to "fold in half, graft stitches together, sew onto sweater". Would anyone have any clearer instructions? I am at a loss ... Can someone offer some help. Please.
Thanks.

You are our 3000th member!!! You get this help for free!!!

What they want you to do is to fold the hood in half so that the live stitches that are on the needle are up against each other. Then they want you to graft the stitches together with the Kitchner Stitch to join them without a seam.

I find the Kitchner Stitch difficult to keep track of. It takes practice, which I've avoided.

Another way you could do it is to put the right sides of the hood together--folded so the live stitches are at the top and do a three-needle bindoff. It will leave a seam, but it will be beautifully neat.

I don't know if we are doing the same pattern, but mine says the same. Mine also says that the back should be bound off. then the hood consists of stitches worked from the front left and front right sides with some stitches cast on in between. then these cast on stitches are sewn to the bound off back. My question is, couldn't I just leave the back stitches on a holder then pick them up later instead of casting on extra and sewing them together? Does this question make sense? Ingy help me too! Please with sugar and a cherry on top?

BTW, the pattern I am using is from Junior Knits: 25 Stylish Projects for Children Three to Ten Years by Debbie Bliss
It's a sweater called Bill

hood on toddler sweater....help
Thank you. both folks who answered my question about the hood... I'm sorry but I have not heard the expression "live" stitches before... are those the 60 on each end of the 42 (which are supposed to be grafted to the neckline)??? or...are the 42 on the holder for grafting to the neckline considered the live ones? Sorry... and thanks again!!

First, live stitches are the ones on the needle--they haven't been bound off yet. I'm picturing that they want you to joint the top of the head for the hood, but I could be picturing it all wrong. If I'm way off, let me know.

April--You could do it the way you said, I think, but I believe the reason they have you bind off and sew hoods back on is to give it a ridge for a bit of stability so the hood doesn't just pull the back of the sweater down.
