Sewing zipper into sweater

I am near finishing a baby sweater that requires a zipper to be sewn in for closure in the back. Any suggestions or tips on how to insert the zipper for a neat finish? I am assuming it should be sewn in by hand, but would it create a stronger hold if sewn by machine using a long stitch? I welcome suggestions!
