Some questions :)

I have a pattern that I really want to do, but it calls for size 6 circular needles and the closest I can find after going to three stores is size 7. How big of a difference will this make in the pattern? Also, I was taught to wrap yarn balls from the inside out, but I saw one of the videos showing a ball you pull from the inside. Is one better than the other? Also, is there a certain size you should make the balls? I have a skein of yarn that is 268 yds. I am thinking this will make a REALLY big yarn ball... would it be better to cut it or something?

1) It depends what project you are making to determine whether the needle size is a big issue. Make a gauge swatch (i.e. knit a square of fabric) and count how many stitches and rows there are in an inch or 4 inches and see if that is what the pattern calls for. Gauge is not so important for a scarf but it is a HUGE deal for something like a sweater. Even being off a fraction of stitch each inch will set the whole garment off by inches.

2) If your skein is already wrapped up for you I wouldn't necessariliy bother wrapping a new ball of it. If it is on a hank then I would definitely wrap it into a ball. People often prefer center pull balls because it is less work getting at the yarn - all you do is pull instead of unwrap from the outside. Also, I find center pull balls roll around less. Also as a general rule I wouldn't cut yarn unless I absolutely have to - it just means more joins when you are working your piece.

Most pre-skeined yarn is center pull. You just have to find the center. If you're using a hank, then you have to roll it up or you'll get terrible tangles.

I agree not to cut it. It will be a big ball, but why have to join a new end unless you have to.

I agree about the needle size, too. For things that don't have to fit, you can get away with it--it will just be bigger. What is it you want to make?
