what on earth does this mean!!

Hello Fellow Knitters!

Am knitting a baby cardigan in a lacey pattern. Have done one of these years ago by can't remember being as confused as this..

I am starting with the border as the pattern states but what I don't know exactly what this means:

'yfwd, yrn, yon,...'

I know what the abbrevs stand for can't work out what to do.
Can anyone help?

A yarn forward, etc simply adds a stitch. It also creates a little hole which is usually used as part of the pattern design.

See if this video helps. Scroll down to where the abbreviation is. The pink video is for continental knitters, the blue for english.

Thanks to all for replies.

I think I get yfwd but put together with 'yarn round needle' and 'yarn over needle' all I end up doing is winding the wool around the needle twice and it doesn't go right when I do the next row. I don't know how else to do it.

The instructions for one row read like this:

'k1, yfwd, yrn,yon,k2tog,yfwd,yrn,yon,k2tog,k1. 8sts'.

Perhaps I am doing it right but somehow winding the wool in the wrong way.

Next row says

k3,p1,k2,p1,k1

It's just that as far as I can see yfwd, yrn, and yon seem like different names for one thing but just written to make it more complicated!!!

It looks like "yfwd, yrn,yon" means you're suppose to make 2 yarn overs consecutively, based on the "8sts".

I have never worked a pattern with a double YOs, but I know they exist.
I've seen patterns where the 2 YOs are worked as 1 st to make a BIG hole.

By any chance are you trying a sample piece before you get started on the sweater? I can't quite imagine knitting off consecutive YOs.
