Ruffle rib scallop pattern

My pattern reads like this:
Beg with a multiple of 20 sts plus 9 and end with a multiple of 8 sts plus 1

my question is, how many stiches do I need to cast on? cannot understand about the "multiple".

Are there two separate parts to the pattern, like a ruffle and then a scallop alternating?

Is there a link to the pattern?

Row1, 3, 5 and 7 (rs) K1, *pl,k1: rep from *to end.
Row2 Purl
Row 4 (ws) P5, K3tog, *P13, Ketog, P1, K3tog; rep. from * end last rep, P13, K3tog, P5
Row 6 P5, K3tog. *P9 K3tog, P1K3tog; rep from * end last rep. P9, K3tog, P5.
Row 8 P5, K3tog, *P5, K3tog., P1, K3tog; rep. from * end last rep. P5 K3tog. P5 cont. in established rib as desired.

I still can't get my mind around the math for this. :thinking:

You need 49 stitches as it's written, without any pattern repeats. With one pattern repeat, you'd have 69 stitches.

How wide do you want your scarf?

I think if you just cast on a multiple of 20 + 9, and end the last repeat as the pattern states, you should be ok.

Thank you for your reply. I think you are right! I had figured it was 49 sts that I had to cast onbut I wasn't sure. At first I casted on 38 sts. and when I got to the end, sts were missing. So, i was confused. Then I counted the sts on Row 4 and came up with 49 sts. I guess I had to cast on 49sts. Ok, thank you and I'll try it again.
